The Hot Dogs at a Winery Thing

Every winery in Prince Edward County serves the same charcuterie board. Cured meats, a few cheeses, dried fruit, crackers. Don't get us wrong — we like a charcuterie board too. But we wanted to do something different.

So we serve hot dogs.

Not gas-station hot dogs. Gourmet all-beef hot dogs. Kimchi with chive mayo and toasted sesame. A pocket dog wrapped in foil for the road. They're $5 to $7 — eat them with a wine flight and tell us they're not the best lunch you've had this week.

They're still the workhorse of the menu. But they don't have the board to themselves anymore.

Street Food, From Everywhere

The hot dog is American street food. Once you've built a kitchen that does one kind well, it turns out the rest of the world has been doing the same thing for a lot longer — food you eat standing up, with something cold in your other hand. So we started cooking that too.

We're not going to tell you it's authentic. None of us grew up in Tbilisi or Kraków. These are our versions, cooked in a small kitchen in Hillier with the herbs from our own garden and whatever the County is growing that week. But we kept the real names on them, because the names are half the reason the dishes are good — somebody figured this out a long time ago and we're just cooking it.

It also happens to be exactly the right food for a winery. Street food is built to be eaten with one hand, shared across a table, and washed down with something cold. That's a patio. And it goes with natural wine far better than a cheese board does — pickles, chile, sumac, fermented things and vinegar are what our pet-nats and skin-contact wines actually want beside them.

Garden-Sourced When We Can

The herbs on your plate didn't come out of a jar. We have gardens at the winery and we use them — dill, oregano and thyme in the popcorn, thyme on the whipped feta, dill through the pickles, cilantro and chives across the board. When something's in season and growing twenty feet from the kitchen, that's what's in your food.

It's not a "farm to table" marketing slogan. It's just how a small family winery in Prince Edward County does it when we have room for a garden and time to walk to it.

Vegan and Vegetarian

Not an afterthought — there are four vegan dishes on the fall menu and four more vegetarian ones. And every wine we make is vegan.

  • Vegan: Red Lentil Dal · Garden Herb Popcorn · Togarashi Edamame · Pickled Green Tomatillo
  • Vegetarian: Roasted Beet Salad · Polish Mushroom Toast · Whipped Feta · Street Corn Nachos (as served — the pulled chicken is an add-on)

Gluten-free? We always have gluten-free options. Our ingredients change week to week with what's available, so ask your server to clarify today's selection.

Best Time for Food

Lunch (11am–2pm): Quieter. Great for catching up with friends over tacos and a flight.

Mid-afternoon (2–4pm): Full menu, full bar, and the best light on the patio.

Friday and Saturday evenings: We're open until 9 and the kitchen stays on the whole time — the only late kitchen in Hillier, and the quietest part of the day for a table.

Menu Questions

Can I get food without doing a wine tasting?

Yes. You don't have to taste to eat. Walk in, take a table and order food on its own, or with a glass, a flight, a cocktail or a pop. The kitchen is open to everyone.

Is the kitchen open the whole time you're open?

Yes. If we're open, the kitchen is on. There's no lunch-only window and no gap in the afternoon — you can order food right up until we close.

Do you have vegan and vegetarian options?

Yes — four vegan dishes and four vegetarian ones on the current menu. Vegan: Red Lentil Dal, Garden Herb Popcorn, Togarashi Edamame and Pickled Green Tomatillo. Vegetarian: Roasted Beet Salad, Polish Mushroom Toast, Whipped Feta and Street Corn Nachos as served. Every wine we make is vegan as well.

Do you have gluten-free options?

Yes, we always have gluten-free options. Our ingredients change week to week with what's available, so ask your server to clarify today's selection — they'll know exactly what's safe on the current menu.

Is there food for kids?

Yes. There's a kids menu for ages 12 and under — a plain hot dog is $2 — plus non-alcoholic slushies and pop. Plenty of the main menu works for kids too: popcorn, edamame, nachos and cookies all get ordered for the table.

Does the menu change through the year?

Yes, it's seasonal. We change what's available by the season, so dishes come and go — the summer ceviche and watermelon plates give way to warm bowls and toasts in the fall. If something you loved isn't listed, it's seasonal rather than gone for good.

Can I order food to take away?

Yes. Anything on the menu can be packed to take with you — just tell us when you order. The Pocket Dog was designed for exactly that, and the 12-Pack Party Box travels well if you're feeding a group somewhere else.
