How to Make a Vermouth Spritz (with Madonna Vermouth)

  • Mike Traynor

A Lemon Vermouth Spritz with other Traynor summer cocktails on the patio at the vineyard in Hillier, Prince Edward County

The spritz is the easiest great drink in the world: something bitter or aromatic, something fizzy, ice, citrus. Ours is built on Madonna, our dry white vermouth — floral, a little citrusy, low in alcohol, and made for slow afternoons on the patio.

Ingredients

How to make it

  1. Fill a wine glass or Collins glass with ice.
  2. Add the Madonna vermouth, then top with sparkling wine and a splash of soda.
  3. One gentle stir, garnish with an orange or lemon slice, and you’re done.

Tips

Keep it low and slow — a spritz is an aperitif, not a shot, so it’s built to sip before dinner. Use plenty of ice (it keeps it cold without watering down too fast), and adjust the soda up or down for how dry you like it. Madonna is also lovely simply chilled over ice with a twist if you want to taste the vermouth on its own.
