Introduction:
Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a red grape variety that is known for its complex flavour profile and versatility in winemaking. At Traynor Family Vineyard, we source our Syrah grapes from Watson Vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The variety is both late ripening and winter tender for Prince Edward County, so we do not grow it ourselves.

In the Vineyard:
Syrah is a late-ripening grape variety, which makes it challenging to grow in the cool climate of Prince Edward County. It is also winter tender and requires protection during the colder months. However, it is known to be a high-yielding variety with good disease resistance.

Wine Profile:
Syrah grapes produce wine with a deep colour and a complex flavour profile. The grape is known for its dark fruit flavours such as blackberry, black cherry, and plum, with notes of pepper, spices, and leather. The wine has moderate to high tannins and good acidity. There are also several classic roses made from Syrah.

At Traynor Family Vineyard, we produce a limited amount of Syrah, but typically we blend it with our Merlot to add some spiceness to the wine.

Conclusion:
Syrah is a red grape variety that offers winemakers a unique flavour profile and versatility in winemaking. It's challenging to grow in the cool climate of Prince Edward County, so we source our Syrah grapes from Watson Vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The wines it produces are complex and enjoyable.
