Sauvignon Blanc

Introduction

Sauvignon Blanc is a classic white grape variety that is known for its versatility and complexity. At Traynor Family Vineyard, we are proud to grow this grape variety and use it in a variety of our wines. Our Sauvignon Blanc is planted with 7x3' spacing on 3309 and SO4 rootstock and we have a variety of clones in our vineyard including 108, 159, 242, and 297.

Climate and Terroir

Sauvignon Blanc is a grape variety that is sensitive to cold, which can make it a challenge to grow in the cool climate of Prince Edward County. However, our vineyard is protected by geotextile in the winter, which helps the grape to survive the harsh winter conditions. The soil in our vineyard is mostly clay-loam, with good drainage, which helps the grape to grow healthy and strong.

Viticultural Considerations

Sauvignon Blanc is a low-yielding variety in our vineyard and requires special attention during the growing season. It is sensitive to cold and requires winter protection to survive. The grape variety is known for producing moderate to low yields and is susceptible to powdery mildew and black rot. Proper pruning and canopy management are essential to manage yields and promote a balance between vegetative and reproductive growth.

Wine Profile

Sauvignon Blanc grapes produce wine with a pale colour and a complex flavour profile. The grape is known for its fruity flavours such as citrus, grapefruit, and gooseberry, with notes of grass and herbs. The wine has good acidity and is versatile, making it suitable for a variety of wine styles. Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes are used in our 5th Element, our Inclusion Orange wine, and occasionally a single-variety Sauvignon Blanc. Additionally, we source Sauvignon Blanc grapes from Watson Vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the production of our unoaked Sauvignon Blanc, Fume Blanc, White Pet Nat, and Ophelia Piquette.

Conclusion

Sauvignon Blanc is a classic white grape variety that is known for its complex flavour profile and versatility. At Traynor Family Vineyard, we are proud to grow this variety in our vineyard and use it in a variety of our wines. Due to its cold sensitivity, it can be a low-yielding variety, but our use of winter protection techniques helps to ensure a healthy crop.
