Rainy Day in Prince Edward County With Kids: A Winery's Honest Plan

The forecast turned, the beach is off, and you have a car full of kids asking what the plan is now. Deep breath. A rainy day in Prince Edward County with kids is not a lost day. It is a different day, and if you know where the warm, dry, kid-tolerant places are, it can be one of the easiest days of the trip. Here is ours, written from a winery that has been the rainy-day plan for a lot of families.

Start with us, because we were built for this

We will be honest about why Traynor Family Vineyard works in the rain: we are a winery that decided a long time ago that families were the point, not an inconvenience. That means we have places to sit when it pours, food kids will actually eat, drinks for every age, and staff who do not flinch when a four-year-old does a lap of the room.

The first place to head is the Covered Wall Garden. It is our cedar and mint garden with a full roof overhead, open through the end of November, and it seats about twenty-four. You are outside without being rained on, which is the sweet spot for kids who need air and parents who need a chair. If the day is cold as well as wet, come inside to the Cellar Tasting Room, which is heated, seats sixteen, and is the quietest room we have. Kids are welcome inside. Strollers fit. There are no stairs.

Then order. The kids’ menu has a plain all-beef hot dog, and the Garden Herb Popcorn is the thing every parent orders first because it lands at the table in about a minute and buys you twenty of peace. For the grown-ups, the fall menu is built for weather like this: red lentil dal, mushroom toast, whipped feta with hot honey, street corn nachos for the table. Add a $10 flight of three wines, or a mulled wine once the WineLab Holiday Series is pouring. The kids get a juice slushy or a pop and feel exactly as fancy as you do.

If you have older kids who are curious about what a winery actually does, a rainy day is the best time to book the Cellarmasters Barrel Tasting. It is a guided tasting straight from the barrels with someone who can explain wild fermentation while you stand beside the tank. Kids can come along and ask the questions; the pours are for the adults.

And yes, the dog can come too. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the patios and in the retail shop and tasting bar, and we keep pet beds out. A wet dog on a dry pet bed under a roof while the kids eat hot dogs is, we promise, a very good afternoon.

Five more rainy-day ideas within a short drive

You will want more than one stop on a full rainy day, so here is how we would build it around the winery. Drive times are from our door in Hillier.

The Regent Theatre in Picton (about 25 minutes) is the County’s old-school movie house and the classic rainy-day move with kids. Check the listings before you go, because the schedule changes with the season.

Books & Company in Picton is a big, browsable independent bookstore with a proper kids’ section and a café next door. A good hour, especially with readers.

Slickers County Ice Cream in Bloomfield (about 15 minutes) does not care about the weather and neither do kids. Handmade Ontario ice cream, local flavours, and a line on sunny days that disappears on wet ones. Check their seasonal hours.

Midtown Brewing Co. in Wellington (about 10 minutes) is a casual, kid-friendly spot with indoor seating and straightforward food, and a good option if the adults want a pint while the kids colour.

Macaulay Heritage Park in Picton has an old church, a house museum and grounds that are interesting to kids who like to poke around old things. Hours are seasonal, so look before you drive.

A rainy day with kids, hour by hour

Here is the version we would actually do. Sleep in a bit, because nobody is rushing to a beach. Arrive at Traynor around 11 when we open, when the room is calmest, and settle into the Covered Wall Garden or the Cellar Tasting Room. Lunch for everyone, a flight for the adults, popcorn and slushies for the kids, and let them wander the shop while you finish your glass. Head to Picton for the afternoon: a movie at the Regent if the timing works, the bookstore if it does not. Ice cream in Bloomfield on the way back, then home before anyone melts down. On a Friday or Saturday we are open until 7, so you can also flip it and end your day with us, which is a very good way to end a wet one.

What to pack for a rainy County day with kids

A change of clothes per kid, because somebody will find the one puddle. A blanket for the patio, which doubles as a nap station in the Cellar Tasting Room. Colouring supplies or a card game for the table. A towel for the dog if the dog is coming. And a bit of patience, which we will help with: our quick-order menu means you can order more food from your phone without leaving the table, so nobody has to stand in a line with a toddler.

Rainy day questions we get

Is Traynor open in the rain? Yes. If we are open, we are open, rain or shine, and the kitchen runs the whole time. The Covered Wall Garden and the heated Cellar Tasting Room are the dry spots.

Can kids come inside the tasting room? Yes. Kids are welcome inside and on the patios, with an adult. The Cellar Tasting Room is the quietest option for a baby or an overstimulated kid.

Do we need a reservation? Not for groups of five or fewer. For six or more we recommend one, and for ten or more we need one. On a rainy day the covered spaces fill first, so booking is smart for a bigger family.

Is there somewhere for kids to run? The play area is outdoors, so on a light drizzle it still works. In a proper downpour, the Vineyard Patio and the shop give them some room, and the bookstore in Picton is the next best thing.
