Introduction:
Pinot Gris is a white grape variety known for its versatility and suitability to cool climates, such as Prince Edward County. Although not grown at Traynor Family Vineyard, we source our Pinot Gris grapes from Watson Vineyard in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This variety is known for its ability to produce wine with a range of styles, from dry and crisp to rich and full-bodied.

Climate and Terroir:
Pinot Gris is well-suited to the cool climate of Prince Edward County but requires protection in our winter climate. The grapes are harvested in late September and early October, allowing them to retain acidity and freshness. The soil in the vineyard is mostly clay-loam, with good drainage, which helps the grape to grow healthy and strong.

Viticultural Considerations:
Pinot Gris is a moderate vigour vine, requiring proper pruning to manage yields. The grape is susceptible to common cold-climate diseases such as powdery mildew and black rot. Pinot Gris is known for producing medium yields and is a good choice for growers looking to produce high-quality white wine.

Wine Profile:
Pinot Gris grapes produce wine with a pale colour and a complex flavour profile. The grape is known for its fruity flavours such as peach, apricot and apple, with notes of spice and honey. The wine has good acidity and a range of styles can be produced from dry to off-dry. At Traynor Family Vineyard, we source our Pinot Gris grapes from Watson Vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake. We macerate the fruit on the skins for 12 hours and age it in a barrel for three months to add some texture and weight to the wine. The only wine we use Pinot Gris for is our Pinot Gris.
